Day6

Start 9.15am

I have finished with my final design and i have used my book cover design to let it follow on my other designs that the client wanted to see, below are my final designs.

Book Cover

Book Cover Final Design.

Ebook Cover Final for websites like Amazon

Website Final. This is what the client was mostly looking to achieve, i found this hard to do as he wanted alot of information just on one page, but i think ive managed to come up with something suitable, The colour work well with each other.
             Front                                  Back

Above is my final design for the Postcard as you can see i have used elements from the website to make the design noticeable by the color n the symbol.

Bookmark Design Final, Ive kept this simple, the top design is the front side of the bookmark, and is the main focus on the book, the back side of the bookmark uses the same colour used on the website, with the website name also on, as part as advertising for the book.

This is the Facebook ad, just the basic design of the book is used for the small image, the text block needs to be decided on by the client but i created this just as an idea so he could see how the whole thing works together.

Now i need to mount my designs ready to see the client on the day.

Here are my 3 boards that will be shown to the client.

Day5

Start 9.15am

More variations of the sandpaper book cover

Ive decided to go with these book cover for my final design.

I just need to place the barcode on the book to complete this.
I believe my book works well, It has texture that represents their travel through the dessert, the symbol i have chosen to use is the Shen Ring, this means Eternity and Protection, in the story the symbol represents the part when Thoth offers Dan the chance to become imortal, and throughout the story they protect him as the evil Loki is trying to use him to gain access into his universe that he was removed from.

This is my first trial at the website, however on the website about the information about where u can get the book from is miising as there  was no room with this design, it would need to be a two page website and i would just have the symbol and the text in the middlle with an enter site at the bottom, the big block of type would go on the next page with the publisher info and the to purchasing info.
As the client would like a onepage website i need to reconsider the layout, but Im finding it difficult to lay it out how i would like to see it  as there is only so much space.

This is my prefered website ,The light colour in the background makes the book cover stand out and not get lost in the information as the old one the client has already was merged together.

Looking back at both of them, this (above) i have decided to go with for my website as its a more earthy colour, and works all in all better visually.

Below is my Bookmark, there wasnt alot of development to this as theres not much u can do with a bookmark with this brief, i think its completed to the best way it could be to fit in with my design.

Day4

Start 9.15am

Here is the first trial of the Quibble book cover,
I looked at a few typefaces such as Aldus, Arabic Typsettting to name a few but i decided to go with Garamond as it suited the book well with the images i chose to develop.

I think this work well overall but it maybe to serious for the book cover, I didnt find the book  humourous as such its more the character are sarcastic. I do think the image adds a bit of mistery to the whole thing hopefully causing it to more eye catching.

Further development, I think the sandpaper paper works best and also represents there journey through the desert in the book, i think each of these symbols represent the book as a hole.

Day3

Start 9:30

My scans of  my experiments from the previous day

Im going to continue to develope both these ideas with just a Simple image such as a symbol, i do find that the Sandpaper design once printed off is more visual interesting as the sandpaper gives the look of textured paper, the whole book could be made with this effect.

I have been looking into the symbols for my design and i have come across a few that are interesting ans that i think are relevant to the books story.
Below are scanned drawing i did of the symbols i found.

These smbols i have found i believe will would work well as they are my interperations of the book, the client may disagree and therefore would have the option to change the symbol to a symbol he believes would fit best.

Above is an intricate design i found of the symbols similar to the meaning of the cirle.

Here are my sandpaper paintings and bronze embossed image on copper sheet.
The symbols relates to the story.

The Shen Ring - Symbol of Enternity and Protection

The Symbol of Infinity

The Symbol of World Triad - Originally an oriental symbol.
Other countries use this symbol for signs of  Reality or Fate, Eternal spiraling
                                               circles of time and Eternity.

This Symbol Ouroboros mean - Self Reflexivity or Cyclicality, Something constantly re-creating itself.
                                                 The Eternal Return.

Tomorrow i plan to try to place these as imagery on my book cover to start with.

Day 2

Start 9.15am
Continuing the research of quibble.......

Ahuizotls seem to be fairly unknown wether they truly existed, some say a magical creature, In the book the creature is described as
'They looked like large lemurs walking on all fours and with long tails. At the ends of these tails were clawed hands'.

Svart- Alfa known as the Dark elves, If they came out into the daylight they would turn into stone, In the book they are underground animals and where more like Loki Henchmen.

The other Characters that are in the book seems to be made up, but all have a important part into making the story work.

Brans Head the story is that it Bran, a Giant was injured in a battle and ordered that his head to be cut off and his head to be buried in London facing France to stop invasion, however after some years King Author demanded that it be removed as he strength alone was luck enough for his country.....When the head was finally removed by his request of the King bad luck came upon them, This follows through into the story causing death.

Quibble is a Grutten from another universe, a Shape Shifter with powers of  temporal displacement, He is explained as of being a old looking man with white hair piercing eyes, dressed in a cerise boiler suit and yellow boots. He is Chalchiuntlicues lover.
Quibble - to disagree over minor issues.

Don Oxford a weathy man who is role is to help Quibble, in his quest, which he is unaware of at the start. Don seems to have certain powers that they are after, powers of temporal displacement. He is great danger as Loki needs Don too so he can gain entry to his universe once more.

Sally works as Don's secretary/ assistant. She is down to earth and helps through the quest once she has realised its all real.

These are not all the characters present in the book however i myself feel that these are the main characters, that have an impact in the book.

Looking up these characters and briefly comparing the sourced information to what i have in the book, i see alot of similarities, some which have been brought to a more modern times and still works as a whole, Ive found the Mythology to be a big part of the stories background imagery as the story goes to many parts of the world where thes myths have come from, I think it may be best to look into these too

Places

Bodhnath Stupa, Nepal is known as the most holiest Buddhist in Kathmandu.

Portala Palace, Tibet used to reside the Dali Lama until he fled to India in 1959, today it has been coverted into a museum.

Mogoa Caves, Dunhuang, China Mongoa means high up in the desert, the 750 caves are filled with paintings and artiifacts.

Inspired by my research so far i decided to experiment with different media to try to get the effect of wall drawings, These are mentioned through out the book as a means of travel and escape. In Mythology it was means off telling a story of the Gods.
To Start with i looked into copper sheets and embossing it slightly raising out an image and hopefully giving the effect of a wall carving, For the moment i just used the image of quibble off the front cover of the book.
Below is the image of what i have achieved so far.

Embossed Copper Plate (Quibble)

I think this is quite effective, however im not sure how it would look on a cover of a book, i need to scan this to see once i have found a image i think works best, Im going to look in to Greek Symbols and other possible symbols from other countries relating to places visited in the book relating to time, measurements etc, as the book is about time travel and universal portals. I think too that i will do the the embossing to be raised out so it looks chiseled out.

My other experiment was to paint onto sandpaper usuing paints to create a more modern looking wall painting to work with the modern approach of the book. I need to possibly look at how different paints and how they take on sanpaper to get the best effect needed.

Image of Quibble on sandpaper using Glass paints.

Above is a rough idea how an image would look, I have not concentrated much on colour yet as i want to look into the image first on what i want on the front cover, i feel if i do a scene from within the story it my take away from the mystery behind the book and be less appealing, Maybe something to do with numbers and symbols also something as simple as circle to represent a time loop i feel it would fit the book better and be more appropriate to the whole feel of the book.

My workspace at the end of Day 2

Day1

10.00am Start
We had our briefing with Jack Lever, the Author of Quibble. He has asked us to create a Book Cover (E Book Version), Postcard as part of advertising as well as the standard postcards, A Webpage, A Facebook Ad and a possible Bookmark.
A scene from out of the book with colours that flowed from is original book cover was his inital idea of how things could look. Some places that are mentioned in the book are real places and not made up. I do think this is a good start but im also gooing to look at alternative ways i could create something interesting.

This is the Website he has, my webpage has to be of 1024 x 768 px, and it has to be able to work with my final design.

The book cover dimensions are 21.6 x 14 x 1.8 cm, to create an Ebook Version for the use on the internet just the front cover is used and i will only need the dimensions of 21.6 x 14 cm.

Facebook ad has to work at 110px x 80px

Above is a brief description of what is needed to complete a facebook ad.

To create a postcard the dimensions need to be of standard size, this would be 105mm x 148mm.

Another part of the brief is to look at creating a bookmark as this would be great advertising material. The dimensions ive found this to be are 40mm x 150mm.

Characters

Throught the book Mythology was mentioned alot, Alot of the characters are Mythical Gods and creatures. I think these are an inportant part of the book and looking into it further as well has time travel and things like The Black Whole will hopefully help in toward my final design.

Thoth known as the moon god, inventor of spoken and written language, astronomy, geometry and medicine.
He was also a measurer and recorder of time and sometimes depicted in pictures with a head of an ibis.He was highly worshiped in ancient Egyptian Scribes. In the book he too was an important hightly regarded man but in a modern setting.

Ma'at was the goddess of Truth, Balance and Order, she was said to be the wife of Thoth.
A Ostrich feather is the symbol of Ma'at and she is pictured either in a seated position or standing. When the dead are said to be judged its the decision of Ma'at feather It is weighed against their hearts and if their hearts where as light as Ma'at's feather then they would be granted eternal life in The Duat, if they where heavy their souls where consumed by Ammut. In the book she works in PULPI (Pan Universal Legislative Policy Inspectorate) same workplace as Thoth and they had been lovers.

Chalchiuhtlicue means "She who wears a Jade Skirt". She was known as the Aztec Goddess of Water and Fertility. In the book she has effects men in a intimate way just by touch and being in her presence.

Loki a Norse God is known for making problems for other gods and is also a shapeshifter. He is crafty sneaky and malicious, Because of all the malicious things he did and bringing death upon Baldur and is now trap in ecternal punishment. In the book he pulls tricks to mislead Quibble etc along the way in his adventures as he needs to use Don Oxford to gain entry back into his universe which he was banished from. He came to a tragic end in the book.In the book he was also called Finbog Farbautisson an Icelandic Diplomat.

Phobos was the Greek Mythogical God of Fear and in the book was an evil associates of Loki as was
Deimos was Greek God of Terror. And was Phobos twin brother and brought dread and panic to all.
